Forming Supply Chains in a Business Network

This paper discusses the complexity issues in the formation of supply chains (as sub-networks) in a specific complex business network. Supply chains formed in the network are different from normal ones. They are formed and dis-formed frequently, and the roles of the actors switch rapidly between vendor and client. The relationships and interactions among actors are of a dynamic and paradoxical nature. Inquiring into a real business case, we illustrate the formation process of supply chains in such a unique network based on a conceptual framework that is a combination of boundary specification for sub-networks from social network theory (with three focuses actor, relation and event), and contingent self-organization from complexity theory.
